May Botanical Drawing Course

Wednesday 15th - Thursday 16th May 2024

A two day, non-residential course hosted by Matthew in his home studio, focusing on drawing plants and flowers in the gardens at Ham Court.

Students will enjoy a delicious lunch each day, cooked by our in-house chef Dave using locally sourced ingredients including some grown in Matthew’s Kitchen Garden.

Whether you draw for your job as a designer or for pleasure (not mutually exclusive), understanding the form, geometry and growth of your floral subjects is key to making telling images. Botanical drawing is only looking carefully at plants; analysing and then working out how to express that information clearly and beautifully. All too often this means exaggerating oddities (knobbly roots, twisted petals, contorted stalks) but for me it is rather a matter of celebrating the essence of each plant and flower.

By holding courses at his home, Matthew hopes to share his pleasure in the mediums and techniques he has developed as well as his regular sources of inspiration in and around the farm and garden.
